Dr. Roger Kehler’s Lasting Legacy

As a young boy growing up on a ranch in southern Colorado, Dr. Roger Kehler developed his passion for working with and taking care of animals. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Haleiwa on the island of Oahu where he worked briefly at veterinary clinic on the North Shore. He moved to Maui in 1981 and began a mobile vet practice, which frequently brought him to remote locations including Hana and Kahakuloa to tend to large farm animals. During this period, Dr. Kehler also made a few visits to Molokai to care for the mules used to take travelers to Kalaupapa. In 1983, Dr. Kehler established Kihei Veterinary Clinic at its original location on Lipoa Street. He purchased Lahaina Veterinary Clinic in 1986 and continued to operate both offices simultaneously until 1990 when he sold the Lahaina practice. In 1995, Dr. Kehler moved KVC to the South Kihei Rd location. Although Dr. Kehler passed away in December 2015, his veterinary practice remains in operation with the help of Dr. Jerob Leaper. The family of Dr. Kehler is grateful to have another wonderful veterinarian to assist in carrying out the legacy of KVC.

Kihei Veterinary Clinic History

Kihei Veterinary Clinic is an independently founded, locally owned, and operated veterinary practice. It was established by Dr. Roger Kehler in 1983. Originally located in Kihei Professional Plaza on Lipoa Street, Dr. Kehler relocated KVC to a location on South Kihei Road in 1995. Dr. Kehler built the KVC office from the ground up and did extensive work to restore the natural wetlands on his property. As a result of his wetland restoration efforts, Dr. Kehler created a safe habitat for the endangered Hawaiian Stilt, which continues to frequent the property.

In January of 2017, Dr. Jerob Leaper purchased the practice from the Kehler family and looks forward to continue on a legacy of compassion for the animals of Maui.

Dr. Jerob Leaper has a commitment to small animals, including dogs and cats, and all of their related medical treatments.  He believes in dedicated, hands-on, back-to-basics veterinary care that includes thorough diagnostic exams, preventative care and comprehensive diagnostics and treatment when warranted.  The continued legacy of Dr. Roger Kehler is of the utmost importance!
